Fraud is that flaw in the system that causes every year 5% of your turnover dissolves into thin air...

And you get into someone's pocket without you knowing it.

However... That someone is not just anyone,

  • but it may be one of those employees you hired to carry out your life project,
  • that supplier you relied on
  • or that customer or partner who gives you a glimpse of great business opportunities

In short, those people you trust blindly and pay every month for their work or to whom you entrust your image, your values, your products and services.

Perhaps someone is betraying you...

And he is taking, from time to time, what he needs to hit you.

No, it will not stop until you find out.

When was your last check on the
vulnerability of your company?

I am Fabio Tortora and I work in anti-fraud consulting and training.

  • In 1999 I founded ACFE ITALY CHAPTER in Italy, the Italian chapter of the most important international anti-fraud association whose focus is train and certify the best professionals in the field of management of risks of fraud.
  • In 2013 Senapa Consulting fundmy training and anti-fraud consultancy company.

They are one of the first anti-fraud consultants and trainers in ItalyI deal with help companies identify vulnerabilities to which they are exposed in terms of risk of fraudand I propose interventions tailor-made for protect the company and its assets.

Senapa Consulting is, to date, thethe only authorised body preparation for the ACFE CFE certification (Certified Fraud Examiner) for Italy.

Among many, I have taught courses for KPMG, PwC, EY, Bank of Italy, Trenitalia and ATAC, Unicredit Banca, Findomestic, Autostrade per l'Italia, Campari, just to name a few; I have participated as an expert in several broadcasts and written editorials for Il Sole24Ore, Repubblica, Panorama, Corriere della Sera and many others.

Nobody talks to you about fraud when you open a company.

Although it is one of the biggest risks you are exposed to, the common conception is that fraud is a negligible risk.

You know at least one famous one, just think of egregious cases like Parmalat or Enron, but you are pretty sure it will never happen to you

  • either because you don't know the real risks to which you are exposed
  • either because the laws do not oblige you to deal with it
  • both because it is an area that you rarely invest in training courses, workshops and seminars.

What employee would want to cheat the company that gives him a living?

But, above all, it is possible that at the first signal that something is not working you don't realise it?

Actually, yes.

The risk is much greater of what you believe...
and the worst thing is that, often, when you realise, it is too latein addition to the damage, you will suffer the mockery that there is nothing more you can do and you will have to face legal fees, manage reputational problems and perhaps suffer administrative and fiscal consequences.

According to the Report to The Nationsthe ACFE report on fraud trends in the world,

5% of each company's turnover ends up lost to fraud every year.

And I'm not just talking about exorbitant sums of money, such as false accounting, but also of small thefts that, one after the other, burden the year-end budget without anyone noticing.

The numbers of fraud

Internal company fraud is much more frequent than you think and can be committed by anyone who collaborates, or has collaborated in the past, with the company (suppliers, employees, customers, external collaborators).

Are they all possible fraudsters?

We cannot collect data scientifically and systematically, because most frauds go undetected.

However, realistic estimates can be made:

The 25% between employees and collaborators of each company is an at-risk subject, i.e. a possible criminal;

Another 25% is composed of absolutely trustworthy peoplewho will never commit a crime, at least within your organisation
The remaining 50%Instead, it consists of persons who may belong to either of the two categories depending on situations and 'opportunities'

This means, numbers in hand, that 75% of the people your company deals with are potential fraudsters.

In short, you are letting those who want to harm you work in the shadows, but under your nose.

Why should your employees defraud you?

The fraudster is a serial criminaldependent on money and crime.

What does it mean?

As long as he finds a way to defraud you, he will not stop.
It is only when he is discovered that he raises his hands, but not before.

The "Basic 'elements' that lead a person to commit fraud are 3:

Psychological pressure
The employee is in a position to commit fraud when he feels a strong psychological pressure related to the need to 'solve a problem' or 'satisfy a need'.

Rationalisation
Precisely from this perspective, the subsequent reasoning of those who are about to commit fraud is made according to the find a valid motivation for the act they are about to perform.

Vulnerability
This is where the company and its vulnerability-opportunities: the right opportunity. It is opportunity that makes the man a thief. E companies are full of opportunities and therefore implicit accomplices of the perpetrators of fraud.

If you don't do the checks, you are their accomplice

If you don't check you are an accomplice of the fraudster: you create opportunities and leave those doors open for the criminal to wait.

While fraud can never be completely eliminated, it is also true that taking courses that help you understand its mechanisms and identify the flaws in a system

is of enormous help in preventing and combating crimeas well as being the only possible instrument.

That is why you have to train and prepare yourself if you want to prevent and minimise the risk of being subjected to fraud of any kind.

Every year, 5% of your company's assets dissolve due to fraud perpetrated intentionally behind your back.

Your employees and collaborators, the people you have chosen to help you carry out your business project, do not always espouse your ideals.

As you have seen, the statistics speak for themselves: the 75% of the people you run your business with may be cheating you behind your back... And wreck what you, for years, have built with effort, work, time and money.

All it takes is a door left open a little too wide, that glimmer that for some becomes light, and for you a black abyss with no way out.

Because that is what fraud is: a black hole that devours your turnover, invisible until it is too late.

Because there is no remedy for a fraud: by the time you discover it, your money has gone up in smoke, and in addition to the damage you suffer the mockery of helplessness.

The only solution is to PREVENT.

That is why you have two roads ahead of you today:

give full confidence to everyone around you, keep losing that 5% that can be detrimental to you, and risk it turning into an abyss...

Or you can start making checks, e train you to avoid which that black hole becomes a chasm sucking up your life's work.

You can remain that betrayed entrepreneur or manager to be mocked
